The Art of Choosing a Post Title

One of the most important aspects of a post is the title since visitors will choose whether or not to read a post based on the content of the title. I’ve collected some post titles from some famous blogs that really grabbed my attention, and I’ve decided to analyze each title to determine why each title made me want to read the article.

The first title comes from a freelancing blog called Freelance Switch, and it consists of the following words: What Freelancers Can Learn from Evel Knievel. My first impression upon reading the title was how two dissimilar ideas and objects could be so similar. The author takes Evel Knievel, introduces him, and then goes on to explain how the freelancing business is just like his life. This approach helps to connect with readers by giving them a familiar subject to compare the freelancing business.

The second title comes from a blog called Problogger, and the interesting title is the following: 7 Types of Blog Posts Which Always Seem to Get Links and Traffic. These titles that contain an indication of lists always draw me in to read the article. Why? They are always short and concise with no beating around the bush. In most posts, you have to read through dozens of useless text to get to the important parts, but these posts just spit out everything you need to know in a precise, shortened manner. The method is also very easy to write about, since you will only have to support each point with a few sentences.

The third title comes from a blog called Entrepreneur’s Journey containing the following words: How To Start A Business On A Budget. These “how-to” guides really grab my attention because as a reader, I feel like I have to continue to read to find out the answer. A simple question used as a hook keeps my eyes continually peeled to find out the answer that is lurking in the post. This technique is a great way to explain concepts or ideas.

I’d also recommend that you write the post first, and come up with a title after you finish so you can get all of your ideas down. You’ll probably think of a catchy title while you are writing the article.

Any chance you could link to the posts you mention? A few of them sound like they’d be really up my alley.

    1. Comparing wildly different things.
    2. Lists of useful information.
    3. How-to.

Cool. I think I shall try to implement this more often.
